Award winners flock to Murwillumbah

Australia Day may have been rained out on the Tweed but that didn’t dampen the spirit of this year’s Australia Day award winners from across the Tweed.
The Tweed Shire winners along with winners from six of the local villages, flocked to the Murwillumbah Civic Centre on Saturday afternoon to finally receive awards. The afternoon also included a citizenship awards ceremony.
Just under 400 people were on-hand to see the awards presented to the top volunteers, sports people and academic achievers around the valley with Tweed Coasters right in the thick of it, receiving some of the region’s top accolades. Pottsville’s Rosie Kahl thanked her school and her family for her Young Achievers Award while Sports Star of the Year Kane Townsend paid tribute to his family as well as the Cabarita Beach Table Tennis Club. Kane and brother Wade head to Sydney this weekend in search of a place in the Australian team for the London Olympics.
As well as the major district award winners, several district awards were also presented including those for the Bogangar/Pottsville region. The awards were presented by Cabarita Beach Pottsville Beach Lions president Vicky Mansen and Tweed Coast Rotary’s to the top young achievers in the Bogangar/Pottsville region. They had been originally scheduled to be given out as part of the Australia Day celebrations at Bogangar School.
