Federal Member for Richmond Justine Elliot dropped in last week to visit the new Murwillumbah Meals on Wheels centre to see just what the $40,000 funding grant she announced last year has been used on.
The money was to equip the group’s new premises which have an office, meal preparation and storage centre.
The local Member had announced the grant at the previous Meals on Wheels premises at the Murwillumbah Hospital last year.
The new premises are located at 1/2 Golden Links Drive, Murwillumbah.
“The new Meals on Wheels centre provides for more office space and improved meal preparation and storage areas so that the wonderful volunteers can continue to carry out this vital community work within a much larger premises,” Justine said
She said the new premises deliver 140 meals locally due to the commitment of the more than180 volunteers.
“I would like to congratulate all the Meals on Wheels volunteers who make such a huge contribution to our community,” said Justine.
Meals on Wheels deliver more than just nutritious meals; their regular visits provide much needed social interaction and help to improve the wellbeing of these members of our community.
The Home and Community Care program (HACC) provides affordable and accessible care to help meet the individual needs of older people, people with a disability and their carers to help them remain living independently.
The new premises are located at shop 1/2 Golden Links Drive and were officially opened on March 16.
