The Bleach Fringe Festival is up and running with a large number of events and displays being held across the Southern Gold Coast.
The festival, which started February 11 and ends on February 26, will see music, art, writing, film and photography sharing the common theme of surfing, on display across the iconic beaches and venues of the Southern Gold Coast.
Ever-changing and fluid like the ocean, the festival eschews traditional gallery settings in favour of a series of beachside and casual indoor pop up events liberally scattered across the coast, including art housed in shipping containers, mobile music truck concerts, children’s workshops, a street festival, and outdoor light shows and cinematic experiences.
From the spectacular natural rock formations at Currumbin to Coolangatta’s iconic pointbreaks, the Southern Gold Coast’s visually stunning shoreline and world-class waves will provide the quintessential backdrop for a celebration of surfing’s vibrant fringe culture.
On February 18 Bleach will play host to the family friendly Kirra Dreaming.
Held at the Kirra Hill Cultural and Community Centre, smack bang on the top of Kirra Point, Kirra Dreaming features children’s workshops such as tie dye fun and writing alongside acoustic music performances to complement the space’s art gallery POP UP Bleach* Collective exhibition.
The day starts at 11am and goes through until 3pm.
Other events include Circular Rhythm with former professional surfer, musician, and cultural performance artist Lucas Proudfoot hosting a contemporary children’s performance that shows children how culture and music fuse together. Using didgeridoo, guitar and percussion instruments, children can participate through song, dance and interactive play.
The day will also feature a writers workshop by celebrated surf author Tim Baker.
On February 25 the Bleach program will include Sea Salt Sunrise – a foodies breakfast delight at Kirra Surf Lifesaving Club.
Ondi of Coolangatta’s Underground Surf is a well-known local surf identity and foodie, and he’ll team up with Kirra Surf Lifesaving Club’s fabulous chefs to deliver a surf concept menu that includes fresh fruit, Nasi Goreng cooked freshly on the BBQ, pancakes and a range of other delicious options.
