It’s film festival time again on the Goldie, and this year the Gold Coast Film Festival is going to be bigger and better than ever! The Tweed Coast Weekly has invited me to take its readers through the highlights of this year’s program over the next four weeks. So, in celebration of our new pop culture focus and exclusive partnership with Supanova Pop Culture Expo, here is the first instalment: Space Nazis, the weird and wonderful Wheedonverse and Harry Potter sees dead people!
Opening the film festival this year is the Australian Premiere of the outrageous Space Nazi sci-fi comedy Iron Sky. Nazis on the Moon, sounds like a hoot, right? If the reception the film received at its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival last month, and the US premiere at SXSW Film Festival this month is anything to go by, Gold Coasters are in for a treat. The film sold out all six sessions in Berlin and has been the hot ticket in Texas. Opening night tickets to the GCFF include entry to the after party at Stingray Bar and include a complimentary drink, so opening night is an absolute must.
The GCFF also boasts the Australian premieres of the new Joss Wheedon and Drew Goddard film The Cabin in the Woods and the new Daniel Radcliff, aka Harry Potter, horror, The Woman in Black.
Joss Wheedon is responsible for such fan favourites as Buffy the Vampire Slayer (writer), Firefly (writer) and not to mention a few small films like The Avengers (writer/director)! The twist at the end of this film is totally wild and it is sure to achieve cult status in the genre.
In The Woman in Black, a young lawyer (Daniel Radcliffe) travels to a remote village where he discovers the vengeful ghost of a scorned woman is terrorising the locals. What follows is a tense gothic horror that follows the classic tradition of thrilling with chills instead of gore. I’ll say this: the film is receiving terrific reviews in the UK and the US and, well…you won’t sleep for weeks.
