NSW Deputy Premier Andrew Stoner, Member for Tweed Geoff Proves and Qld Member Currumbin Jan Stuckey met in front of the border marker at Tweed last week pledging more co-operation between the two states.
The trio were in town to meet with the new Cross Border Commissioner Steve Toms who addressed a community meeting at Tweed Ultima last week.
Mr Stoner said it had been a chance for the community to raise issues that were affecting them directly with the new commissioner Mr Toms.
“There is no better way for Steve Toms to gain an understanding of the key border concerns Tweed has than to meet directly with the people who are affected by these issues,” he said.
“This will help him provide effective advice to the Government about how we can improve services and support for border communities like the Tweed.”
Geoff Provest also praised both the appointment of Mr Toms and his first visit to the region.
Mr Provest has long been a champion of better cross border co-operation.
Mr Toms is not only charged with helping solve problems on the Queensland Border here at Tweed but also on the borders with South Australia, Victoria and the ACT.
“I am thrilled to have the Cross Border Commissioner here in Tweed Heads in just his second week on the job,” Mr Provest said.
“This shows that dealing with border issues is a high priority for the NSW Government.”
Jan Stuckey said the Queensland Government would be watching the new commissioner with interest and may consider a similar program in the future.
