Burleigh Heads surfer Ron Shultz will be ripping up the waves of the Gold Coast with a new lease on life after winning the Suncorp SunWise iPad Survey competition held at the recently completed Quiksilver Pro.
The father of two came away with a weekend surf camp at Surfing Australia’s High Performance Centre (HPC) on the Tweed Coast, a DHD Mick Fanning Swivel surfboard and a year’s supply of sunscreen, by completing an iPad survey at the Suncorp activation booth.
“I’m so happy,” said Schultz. “I didn’t expect to win this. I had the day off work and just entered the booth to get some sunscreen. I ended up seeing some awesome surfing and scored this awesome prize.”
The 51-year-old, who is suffering from a burst eardrum, said he’s looking forward to attending the HPC weekend camp with his daughters.
“I haven’t been surfing too much lately, due to my ear problems, so I’m looking forward to getting in the water and gaining a few surfing tips.”
Four Mick Fanning Surfboards were also awarded to runner-up winners including: Reid Alfred (Yeerongpilly), Ashley Cooper (Gordon Park), Prescilla Chee (Wurtulla) and Blake Wright (NSW).
From February 26 through to March 9, 2011, Suncorp and Surfing Australia were on hand at the Quiksilver and Roxy Pros to make sure spectators were protected from the Queensland sun so they could enjoy world class surfing by the ASP World Tour’s elite surfers.
The Suncorp Skin Cancer SunWise Initiative is an integrated program of partnerships and grassroots activities with a long-term strategy to help educate the community about the dangers of sun exposure.
At the Quiksilver Pro, the Suncorp SunWise Crew provided sunscreen and water to the visitors of the Suncorp shade tent and educated surfing enthusiasts on the dangers of sun exposure.
They also distributed over 35 litres of sunscreen to visitors to the Suncorp tent who witnessed Kelly Slater claim victory in the men’s Quiksilver Pro and Carissa Moore take out the women’s Roxy Pro.
Suncorp launched the Suncorp SunWise iPad survey at the event, where visitors to the Suncorp tent were asked to answer questions on Apple iPads relating to sun safety and lifestyle.
The survey will be rolled out at nine events on the Surfing Australia calendar throughout the year, in order to gauge the sun protection habits of surfers and beach-goers.
