Youth Week starts with a bang – or is that with a band?
The second annual Tweed Battle Of the Bands got under way last Friday night as a pre-cursor to Youth Week which officially starts on Friday, April 13, with a packed week-long program.
A crowd of more than 85 turned out for the opening heat of the battle last Friday despite it being a public holiday and even more are expected over the next two weeks as the Battle and Youth Week both heat up.
The second heat of the Battle will be held at the Tweed Heads Civic Centre this Friday, with the final to be held the following Friday night
Tweed Shire Council Youth Officer Sylvia Roylance said the Battle and the other activities were a good chance for young people to come out and support other young people in their endeavours but it was more than that.
“The first heat was so close that there was a tie and three bands were put through to the final,” she said.
“We got a pretty good turn-out with 82 through the door on Good Friday.
“We usually get around 100 so that was a good number for a public holiday.
“A lot of people just came along to the event to see the entertainment which was nice. The event also re-affirmed that there are some really talented young people who live in this shire.”
Winners on the night, D.A.W.N, Danger at the Door and Eilish Ellen will all play again in next week’s final. Another six bands will face the judges this Friday.
She said the event encapsulated what Youth Week was all about.
“It is about the whole community celebrating youth and the positive things our youth bring to the community,” she said.
