Armidale High School student, Kate de la Motte is celebrating the inclusion of her work in Art Express, the display of outstanding HSC works from across the state.
“My work is inspired by a combination of the technique and style of Del Kathryn Barton and the values and teachings of the surrealist movement,” said Kate.
“Like Barton, my works are created from water colour paints, inks and felt tipped pens and, like the Surrealists, the images filter through my subconscious into the real world.
“I began the work nominated for Art Express with the face of a girl which I embellished with lines, drippings and melting colours to reveal the unexpected; a sense of movement and intriguing shape is at the heart of my work.
“It has never been a struggle for me to find inspiration for my art work; ideas just grow, drip, seep and creep onto the paper.”
While Kate is taking a gap year in 2012 she anticipates it will be a creative period as she develops her interest in a variety of art and expressive forms.
“I am interested in the possibilities of paper-cutting, painting, drawing and sewing; this allows me to avoid limitations and create uncontained, expressive artworks.”
Kate’s work has already received widespread acclaim and it has featured on a number of Armidale High School’s publications this year; a young artist to watch.
