Kings brave rain for draw

The Tweed Valley Kings Soccer side has continued its impressive start to the Gold Coast Premier League competition with a one-all draw with Broadbeach at Cudgen Leagues Club last week.
Coach Craig Madden, who has returned to the club after a year’s break, said his side had a challenging start to the season but had recruited well and was looking good.
But despite taking on finals contenders Gold Coast Knights the first round and now last year’s grand final winners Broadbeach, the Tweed Coast-based side have been unlucky not to be two wins from two.
“We are playing the five top teams – we are taking it week by week,” he said.
“We beat the Gold Coast Knights 2-1 with Armie Ghooti and Chris Edwards scoring the goals.
“We were unlucky not to get the three points against Broadbeach. Both teams played pretty good football in those conditions. A lot of people thought we were the better side.”
Playing in the driving rain at Cudgen, the two teams played end to end soccer, both looking for the upper hand.
The two sides went to the break at nil-all and with the rain getting heavy ,officials considered calling the game off.
However, after spending an extra few minutes in the leagues club’s dressing sheds, the two sides eventually made it out on to the field.
Ten minutes in, the Kings went in front with a goal to Luke Morley. But a minute later Broadbeach hit back with a penalty and, although the Kings continued to make chances, they were unable to break through for the winning goal.
Madden said the weather conditions were disappointing and kept the crowds down for the match, which had to be played at the Leagues club, with the soccer club’s regular home ground, across the road at Reg Dalton Oval, still being used for cricket.
He said that, despite the conditions, he was still impressed with the field at the Leagues club
“The football ground has a beautiful surface, hopefully we can play more games there this season,” he said.
