Ideas grow like weeds in Cabarita Beach/Bogangar with 35 people turning up at to the first meeting of the Community Garden group in Cabarita Beach.
The steering committee was organised and trotted off to visit the Mullumbimby Community Garden with Karen Anderson, the convenor.
A Facebook website, Cabarita Community Garden, has also germinated.
Principal of Bogangar Primary School, Kath Lalor, generously donated a patch of land on the north side of the school property for a period of five years with the possibility of a further five years.
The school also gave the group a head start with the donation of lots of equipment and a storage area. Water tanks and compost bins are already in place.
The gardens will be totally organic – chemicals are banned. An orchard will be incorporated into the patch.
The old garden beds were upgraded and several plants tenderly transplanted in order to organise private allotments for locals to plant.
Long term plans include sales of products.
The group will operate a stand at the Cabarita Vision Workshop on May 6 at the Cabarita Surf Club (9.30am) and welcomes more gardeners to come along, ask questions and / or join. The group are willing to accept donations of seeds, cuttings, manure or equipment at this morning event.
