The second Workmate Poker Rally was held on Saturday, with over 100 registered bikes and more than 30 cars participating. The event raised over $10,000 for cancer affected families.
The atmosphere at Rugby League Park was a cross between a show “n shine, a carnival and a rock festival, with live music rocking into Saturday night. There were all styles of bikes, scooters and cars involved, most at the higher end of the horsepower scale. It was a cause that brought members of a number of different motorcycle clubs together from throughout the region.
The Rally started at 10am at Rugby League Park in Dumaresq Street (opposite the Monckton Aquatic Centre). It went up to Guyra, then to Tingha, across to the Commercial Hotel, Bundarra for lunch, then on to Uralla’s bottom pub (the Thunderbolt Inn), finishing back at Rugby League Park at around 4pm. The round trip totalled about 230kms. Participants received a (playing) card at each location and the best poker hand at the end of the Rally won the $500 cash. The major sponsor of the event was the Pig Dog Shop, which contributed the $500 in the kitty for the winning hand of the day.
That lucky winner was 19-year-old Brianna Pettit, in a deep purple supercharged 2004 SS Commodore. The three queens in her hand at the end of the day capped off a great day for her family – one of the two families benefiting from the event. “My mother is fighting cancer. I’ll be giving her some of the cash,” she said. “It was an awesome event.”
Back at Rugby League Park, trophies were awarded for the best bike and car, such as the People’s Choice Award for a car, which went to Brett Cameron for his 1973 model 308 stroked 336 Holden Sandman.
