Gone fishing

Things are getting a bit fishy here on the Tweed Coast but it’s all in a good cause as the region’s fisher folk prepare for the 28th annual Lions Greenback Taylor Fishing Competition at Bogangar over the long weekend.
The event, the Lions Club of Cabarita- Pottsville’s biggest fund-raiser of the year, is one of Australia’s premier estuary beach competitions and one of the few charity fishing competitions still left running in this country.
Lions Club member Vicky Hansen said the event, which raises money for the Cabarita Beach Surf Lifesaving Club, the Tweed District Rescue Squad and both the Bogangar and Pottsville Public Schools, is well-known throughout the Northern Rivers and Southern Queensland.
“We have had inquiries from Jimboomba, Gympie and Coffs Harbour,” she said.
“We are still accepting nominations – they can be taken on the day or prepurchased.”
Vicky said the group was hoping for a big turn-out after bad weather kept numbers low last year.
“We are looking for 1000-plus for this year’s competition,” she said.
“Two years ago we had more than 800. Last year the weather really let us down but, even though it was held in cyclonic conditions we still got more than 570 entries.”
The Lions club took over the long-running event six years ago after it grew too big for the local family who had been running it.
The event will be held from Saturday, June 9 through to Sunday at 10am and the fish must be caught between the south wall of the Tweed River and the north wall of Evans Heads. All fish must be caught in the estuaries or off the beach – no boats in the ocean – you will be caught out, the Lion’s club members said.
“There are so many people fishing you can’t get away with anything,” the organising group said in agreement.
Weigh-in is held in front of the Cabarita Hotel from 10am, with winners being announced at 1pm.
As well as the Lions club, the event is a community affair, with members of the Pottsville Fishing Club, Caba SLSC, rescue squad and local schools joining in and it isn’t just fishing – there’ll be a jumping castle and face-painting on the Sunday morning.
