Police are continuing investigations after a man was left fighting for his life following an assault at Tweed Heads on the weekend.
About 11am on Sunday (July 1, 2012) a 42-year-old man was driven to Tweed Heads Hospital by a man in a blue Holden Commodore.
The man, who was unconscious and suffering serious head injuries, was treated by hospital staff and later transferred to the Gold Coast Hospital where he remains in a critical and unstable condition.
Detectives from Tweed/Byron Local Area Command were contacted by hospital staff and commenced investigations into the incident.
Police have established the man was assaulted at a house in Dry Dock Road, Tweed Head, on Sunday morning.
During the incident, the 42-year-old man was allegedly punched to the head a number of times and fell to the ground, where he was stomped on before a number of witnesses intervened.
As a result of investigations, police arrested a 36-year-old man on Sunday and charged him with grievous bodily harm with intent and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
He was refused bail to appear in Tweed Heads Local Court today (Tuesday, July 3, 2012).
Detectives are continuing their investigations into the assault and are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.
There are particularly keen to hear from anyone who was in the vicinity of the house on Dry Dock Road and heard or saw the assault.
