It’s getting cold. Electricity prices are rising. What can we do about it?
Sustainable living Armidale (SLA) has developed the ‘I Can Do It!’ public forums funded by the Environmental Trust. The first public forum is to be held on Tuesday, May 29 at the Wesley Hall, Uniting Church.
Guest Speaker for the forum, Armidale architect Mahalath Halperin, a member of SLA, has spent her professional life exploring these issues. She will bring local knowledge, resources and ideas of how to change our habits to reduce energy use and costs.
“Many people believe only expensive physical changes can make a difference to their energy costs and carbon footprint,” said Debra Mill, Coordinator of the I Can Do It! project.
“Changing the way we live in our homes, changing our habits, can make a big difference.
“For example, to keep warmer in winter and cooler in summer, it is important to know when to open and close your curtains.
“Most people close them too late.”
As well as the forum, SLA will bring a series of practical and free workshops from June to August, focusing on the ways we use energy in our homes, produce and lose heat and understand our electricity bills. A tour of four local houses will also explore some of the problems and solutions of living sustainably. With the support of the Men’s Shed and the Women’s Centre, two workshops will demonstrate and provide an opportunity to make curtains and pelmets for your own home. Registrations for the workshops are essential.
