Saturday was the 46th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan during the Vietnam War and veterans from the Gold Coast Tweed gathered to remember.
Two of the bigger ceremonies took place at memorials at local clubs, with almost 350 people gathering at Kirra Sports Club, with guests travelling from throughout the Gold Coast to attend the event.
Guest speaker was Ron Workman OAM from the Currumbin branch of the RSL, while dignitaries included Federal Member for McPherson Karen Andrew and GC Councillor Chris Robbins.
South Tweed Sports held their 8th Long Tan commemoration, with a crowd of 150 attending and nearly 200 for lunch. Guest speaker this year was Brian Vickery from the Kingscliff RSL Sub-branch, with Tweed Mayor Barry Longland and Federal Member for Richmond Justine Elliot both in attendance.
Members of the Kingscliff RSL usually hold their own ceremony but, with the purchase of a new bus last year, decided to fold their ceremony into the bigger South Tweed event. The South Tweed event has been the brainchild of Dave Crockett who came out of hospital for the day to attend.
