It’s the Tweed’s tourist mecca and yet the Tweed Coast has no Tourist Information Centre to direct visitors to other Tweed locations or to show them just what is available on the coast.
However, all that is about to change, according to the Tweed’s peak tourism body.
Destination Tweed CEO Bill Tatchell said plans were now in motion to bring a tourist information centre to the coast.
Mr Tatchell said the new centre would be centrally located in the old garage at the corner of Seaview Street and Marine Parade.
“Eventually we would like to work with council to put a dedicated tourism information centre in when they redevelop the park in central Kingscliff,” he said.
“But this is a start.”
The well-known Kingscliff landmark is already home to the Water Sports Guru, an organisation that conducts tours both above and below the waters of the Tweed Coast as well as learn to surf, paddleboard and kayak lessons.
He said it made sense to share facilities at this stage and it was the perfect location for such a centre, attracting a lot of foot traffic and being centrally located between the two main areas of the business district as well as close to the central caravan park and other accommodation providers.
“A Development Application is currently being prepared for council,” he said.
“We are looking at the resources required and the wheels are in motion.”
The move has been welcomed by the Kingscliff Chamber of Commerce who have been calling for just such a centre in town.
“It’s long overdue,” Chamber president Dennis Eyres said.
“The sooner it happens the better. People will then be informed of the great things that happen in Kingscliff and along the Tweed Coast.”
