It was almost 40 years late, but billionaire mining magnate Clive Palmer finally received the bronze medallion he qualified for back in the early 70s.
Mr Palmer was presented with the medallion, which featured the original number on it, by his old club TH&C last week.
The larger than life magnate was at the club as guest-speaker at a lunch to help raise the $3.5 million needed to redevelop the clubhouse.
The event also formed part of the grand old club’s 100-year celebrations which began late last year, with a dinner for members, past and present.
Mr Palmer said the work would put the Greenmount-based surf lifesaving club in good stead for another 100 years of valuable service to the Gold Coast and Tweed.
More than 100 members, supporters and sponsors packed into the club to hear Mr Palmer talk about his experiences at the club as a young teenager, from the Brothers Rugby League Club in Brisbane, including rescuing an early Japanese tourist who probably didn’t need rescuing and sleeping in the old dorm rooms at TH&C.
