Group prepares to fight DA again

Tweed Business and Residents Focus Group have produced models of what they believe the new police headquarters will look like, based on the plans submitted to council.

Tweed Business and Residents Focus Group has vowed to once again fight against the building of a Police Local Area Command in Kingscliff.
The DA for the proposed Command centre is set to be re-assessed by Tweed Shire Council  and, according to TBRFG president Paul McMahon, the group has already started a campaign.
“The TBRFG has been busy talking to the community about the possibility of the NSW police force’s representatives UGL re-applying for the same development application on the same small block of land in the middle of the residential area in the coastal village of Kingscliff and we have gained over 1600 signatures on a petition to fight against this over development,” he said.
“We will shortly hand over this petition to our local Member Geoff Provest so he can table it in Parliament in September.  The petition demonstrates the community’s anger and strong opposition to the location of an oversized Local Area Command in the middle of residential Kingscliff.
“We are encouraging our local Member Geoff Provest and the NSW Government to find an alternate development site, especially given the recent Parsons Report that made 22 recommendations in an audit of NSW police, one of which was to change from a Local Area Command system to a larger District area and Patrol scheme which would increase the current patrolled area threefold.”
He said the TBRFG totally supported the retention of the existing police facilities in Kingscliff and want to work with all stakeholders to ensure a good outcome for the community and remind Geoff Provest that he had a vision for the Tweed that included a combined emergency services centre and this formed part of his election platform and one of the reasons why residents of the Tweed voted for him in March 2011.
“We would encourage all concerned residents, ratepayers and visitors to the Kingscliff Village and the Tweed Shire to write to the Tweed Shire Council with their opposition to such a development on that particular site,” he said.
“If you would like to send a copy of your submission to our association, then please do so c/- National Seniors Lawyers, 1/150 Marine Parade, Kingscliff NSW 2487 or email to seniors@nationalseniorslawyers.com.au.”
