National focus

Speculation on the future of Member for Northern Tablelands Richard Torbay’s political aspirations were finally answered with the announcement that he will put up his hand for Nationals pre-selection.
At a media conference on Friday outside Booloominbah at the University of New England, Mr Torbay was joined by Leader of the Nationals Warren Truss. Mr Torbay said that, if his bid was successful, he would continue to serve in State Parliament as an Independent until the Federal Election is called.
Quizzed on what he thought would be the reaction from his constituents on his move from an Independent to a member of the National Party, Mr Torbay stated that his agreement with the National Party was that he would still be able to ‘speak up and speak out’ on issues affecting the New England. If successful in the pre-selection he believed that the community would have their chance to express their views at the next Federal Election.
“I can’t be more open and honest about this,” said Mr Torbay.
“I have made no secret about my disappointment and the damage to the Independent brand and I think the number one reason I am in politics is to deliver outcomes to my area.
“I think this is the best way that I am going to be able to do that in future parliaments, given what has happened in a hung parliament.”
Mr Torbay has enjoyed his time in state politics, however, has always had an interest in the federal arena.
“This is my 14th year in state politics and before that I served nine years in local government, including five years as mayor, so I have been in the other two tiers of government.
“If successful, I know it will be a hard contest, I don’t take voters for granted and I have to be pre-selected first, which is a process I have never been through.
“I can do no more than openly and honestly tell the community exactly where it is and where it is up to and give them the opportunity to judge me on my performance.
“That is a matter for the community, that is the democratic system and one that I very much respect.”
Leader of The Nationals Warren Truss welcomed the announcement in Armidale on Friday.
“Richard, myself and the Nationals team share a common bond in our determination to see better outcomes for rural and regional Australia,” Mr Truss said.
“We’re dedicated to our local communities, the interests of country people and the importance of reinvesting in regional Australia. As our ‘Regional Investment Strategy’ makes clear, in tackling these issues we can go a long way towards getting this nation back on track and growing.
Member for New England Tony Windsor released a brief comment on Friday stating “I am not making any public comment and am focused on the opportunities that exist in the current parliament.”
