The decision by the NSW State Government to allow the private but tightly regulated culling of feral pests in the State’s National Parks is not only good news for farmers and the environment, but also a compassionate initiative.
I gather some people who don’t really understand the land are alarmed at the decision, but I ask them to become better informed before condemning the change.
As a farmer I am acutely aware of the pain inflicted and death resulting from attacks on stock by feral animals.
It has been a growing problem since National Parks multiplied and were locked up by NSW Labor governments in the late nineties.
The culling will be limited to feral animals like pigs, dogs, cats and goats and deer which threaten our unique native fauna and flora, and there will be no shooting in wilderness or world heritage areas.
