A group of budding film makers from Guyra Central School are the New England region winners of the ‘Primary School’ category in the second annual Great Schools Show-Off (GSSO) competition. The theme of the competition was to show what makes a particular school a source of pride to its students.
Guyra Central School receives a $600 digital ‘Tough’ still camera from Panasonic for its efforts.
As the New England Region winner, the student production team said their intention was to show off “the great features of our school”.
“We are a vibrant and progressive school,” their submission said.
“The video was shot to show the great work done here by both teachers and students.”
The school intends to load the film on its website and screen it at assembles and special events.
The GSSO competition was a chance for all NSW public schools to tell their school’s story, and promote their school to new audiences. Over 180 schools submitted video entries to the competition judges.
Students already regularly produce videos, podcasts, web pages and a variety of other technology-based materials as part of their coursework. As part of the GSSO, students, working under the guidance of their teachers, were encouraged to develop digital promotional material for their school.
Submissions were judged on a number of set criteria, including the effectiveness of the script, whether it presented the school in a positive light, the quality of its visuals and effective use of voice-overs and music. It was important that the videos were effective, engaging and left viewers with a strong, positive message about the school.
The school’s video is now vying for the State Primary prize of a high-definition camcorder and plasma television package worth over $2500. Winners will be announced in a ceremony at Doltone House, Pyrmont, on Friday, August 3, to close Education Week 2012.
