New ambassadors for Tweed introduced

Three Tweed ambassadors for the 2012 International Day of People with Disability were introduced to the community during a launch in South Tweed Heads this week.
Inspiring Tweed residents Tracey Barrell, Paul Mauchline and Tim Thomas will begin their roles as ambassadors for the annual event, which this year has the theme ‘Removing barriers to create an inclusive and accessible society for all’.
They joined event organisers and staff at On Track Community Programs in South Tweed for the launch on Monday, October 22.
“Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen and others make it happen, and this is what these three individuals in our community continually demonstrate … they make things happen,” Council’s Aged and Disability Development Officer, Karen Collins said.
“As great ambassadors for ‘anything is possible’, Tracy, Tim and Paul have courage, strength and determination that is outstanding by anyone’s measure.
“As part of International Day of People with Disability, these three dynamic individuals will speak at events and local high schools to share their journeys, to break down barriers, promote an understanding of people with disability and encourage support for their dignity, right and well-being, to make our community diverse and inclusive.”
Tracey Barrell was born with no legs and with one arm.
“I live a very fulfilled life. I see myself as a person living with a difference,” she said.
“It’s people’s perceptions or facilities that put the ‘dis’ in my abilities. I’m a dual gold medallist, Order of Australia Medal holder and a mother of two wonderful boys.”
Paul Mauchline was born with cerebral palsy. Even though Paul was faced with major physical challenges, he greets each day with a positive attitude and a remarkable smile. He is completing a Leaders for Tomorrow course, which enables him to fulfil his dream of speaking in public. Paul’s motto is ‘Watch out, here I come’.
Tim Thomas says he lives with challenges, like many other people. He doesn’t let his challenges get in the way of life.
Tim is a qualified dive instructor and First Aid teacher. He holds a Master V skippers ticket and is about to attend the Australian Maritime College to upgrade his qualifications to Master IV.
Tim is also completing a Diploma in Community Services at TAFE and is enrolled at Southern Cross Uni to continue his education.
Tim believes nothing is impossible with the right people, connections and resources.
