Oxley may have made a name for himself as an explorer, but part of the highway named for him is recognised as one of the best motorcycle rides in Australia.
Walcha-based social club, Oxley Riders, are making a name for themselves by raising the image of motorcycles and motorcyclists in general.
Club organiser, Ken Stace, said the club encourages safe riding and promotes a lifestyle to be enjoyed.
“When the club was formed some five years ago, we reasoned it would simply be all about riding bikes,” he said.
Oxley Riders began when an idea was put forward to hold a motorcycle rally at Yarrowitch, east of Walcha.
The original rally, given the name Witch Run, proved such a success it kept going.
Plans are in place to hold the fifth annual Witch Run in February 2013, when all motorcyclists will be welcome.
Following the success of each rally, Oxley Riders have donated to local charities and community organisations in need of assistance.
These include: Walcha Men’s Shed; Grace Munro Aged Care Centre, Bundarra; Yarrowitch Public School; Uralla Neighbourhood Centre; Westpac Rescue Helicopter; Royal Flying Doctor Service; and Angel Flight.
Twelve of their 30 members converged on Uralla early Sunday morning to witness the presentation of a cheque for $250 to Uralla Neighbourhood Centre.
The ceremony over, club members then headed for Walcha, where a similar good deed was re-enacted.
Motorcycle enthusiasts have a high regard for ‘triangle’ touring. Examples include: Tamworth, Walcha, Uralla, Tamworth; and Port Macquarie, Walcha, Uralla, Armidale, Dorrigo, Urunga, Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie.
