The Wanthella Group of the CWA held a Group Council and AGM at the Uniting Church in Uralla on Friday, August 10 to discuss the group’s activities and share ideas with branch members.
President of the Wanthella Group from Kootingal CWA, Anne Maher, said that the Group Council was a chance for the group’s representative at state meetings to discuss, with the rest of the group, broader issues highlighted during recent state conferences.
“Group Council gives all our members a chance to keep up to date with issues being discussed at a state level within the CWA and how these issues affect us here in Wanthella,” said Anne Maher.
Hidden behind the veneer of scone making and cups of tea, the CWA has become a powerful group, lobbying for many important issues facing rural NSW.
“We currently have a motion going to address the issue of four wheeler safety on farms, which goes to state which then goes to relevant ministers to be addressed,” said Anne.
Anne is confident that the CWA has a strong future and is encouraging rural women interested in what affects their community to come along and join their local CWA branch.
“Some of the things that we are known for are cooking and handicraft but we do so much more,” said Anne.
“If you are interested; there is a social interests committee down at state, we look at nursing needs in rural communities, safety issues and health and welfare, there is a lot that you can get involved in.
“Locally we recently held our group handicraft, cookery and environment day. During this, we hold a cooking and handicraft competition to see who will go down to state, and we had a couple of winners at state, which was great for our group.”
