High school friends Dan Nigro, Saen Fitzgerald, Brian Fortune and Cliff Sarcona founded As Tall As Lions in December 2001 as they were looking to continue the momentum of a previous project.
Ten years on and they have become one of the most distinguished and promising contemporary rock acts the world has seen.
Throughout their career they have toured with the likes of Mutemath, Cage the Elephant, Silverchair, Minus the Bear and have also appeared twice on the prestigious Soundwave Festival tour in Australia.
“You Can’t Take It With You” the bands third and final studio album entered Billboard’s “Top 200 Albums” chart at #88, and Alternative Press listed it #7 on their “Best Albums Of ‘09” list and awarded Nigro the runner up spot in their “Best Vocalist” category, gushing “his soaring falsetto and multi-octave range may evoke Jeff Buckley, but Nigro brings depth and soulfulness to a scene sorely lacking both.” And in a 4-1/2 out of 5 star AP album review, writer Casey Boland praised: “You Cant Take it With You” maximizes all of its predecessor’s strengths and further removes the band from the emo milieu. These songs ooze soul, R&B and progressive rock. Dan Nigro sings with all the heart-on-your-sleeve yearning of a young Al Green, while his band issue repetitive melodies and beats like a Stax Records version of Can…it’s dizzingly brilliant, and evidence of how tall these Lions have grown.”
On September 29, 2010 As Tall As Lions announced that the band was amicably splitting up and posted this statement –
“After ten years of music, friendship, laughter, adventure, bliss, blood, sweat, tears, and everything else that goes along with it, As Tall As Lions are retiring for the foreseeable future. There is no sadness on our side, and we hope there is none on yours. We will be playing a handful of shows across the country to try and give everyone an opportunity to see us one last time.
Our sincerest apologies to those who can’t join us at these celebrations, but know you will be there in spirit. Much love to you all, and thanks again for everything.
April 2011 will see As Tall As Lions give their Australian fans a final send off playing several shows around the country in QLD, NSW, ACT, VIC and SA.
Joining them on the run are Central Coast indie/folk up and comers ‘Elliot The Bull” who recently toured with US act Lydia on their aptly titled The Lydia Finale – “A Goodbye & Farewell tour”.
This run will also double as their launch for their debut EP which will become available early April.
