Breaka breaka we have a problem

Kicking off this Saturday is the Breaka Pro, with a six-star WQS event for the Women and a four-star WQS event for the men. Up until the appearance of TC Oswald, Burleigh Point had pristine banks, as was evidenced at the single-fin classic in early January, but now they are gone and a weird rock break, stormbank setup will be there for competitors. But even with this, there will be some exciting surfing on offer, with some of the world’s best surfers using this as a warm up for the Quiksilver Pro, with Mick Fanning, Owen Wright, Bede Durbidge, Matt Wilkinson, and Adam Melling already confirmed to compete in the event.

They will have plenty of competition from a red-hot field, including local Burleigh Boardriders Jay “Bottle” Thompson, Thomas Woods, Nick Callister, and James “Billy” Watson, who picked up the Burleigh Boardriders Wildcard. Plenty of rippers from the southern end will be giving it a rattle, with Jack Freestone well and truly used to Burleigh after his stand-out performance in the single fin contest, plus Brent Dorrington, Oney Anwar, and a host of others. It will be some exciting surfing on offer, and Brent Dorrington, Oney Anwar, Thomas Woods and many others will be tuned up from surfing the last event, which wound up on Wednesday in China.

There is a field of 160 surfers in the men’s division, and 60 in the women’s and with, all the women from the world tour competing, with the exception of Kingscliff’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore, it will be crackerjack action for the ladies as well. Local girls Brittani Nichol, Codie Klein and Ellie Jean Coffey will be all having a crack at the world’s best. It looks like an exciting eight days of competition and every day will be used to the fullest.

If only the bank was still there, but there will definitely be some swell, although the water may resemble a Breaka Chocolate milk for the first few days.

Unfortunately, I will not be able to see all the action this Sunday, as I will be going to see Kingscliff’s finest band ever produced, The Sunnyboys, who will be playing Siromet Winery on that day. You can’t do everything, but I am a “Happy Man”! Ha Ha!
