Following their Gold Coast debut with MASS last year, Australia’s premier regional contemporary dance-theatre company Dance-north returns to The Arts Centre Gold Coast on Wednesday, March 20 with their new show Triple Bill.
Triple Bill features three highly physical works created by Dancenorth’s Artistic Director, Raewyn Hill, with each piece sharing a common expression of community. The pieces include Black Crows, Fugue and A Fall From Grace.
Black Crows was created while Dancenorth was the Artist in Residence at Baryshnikov Arts Centre in New York City. The piece identifies with soldiers in battle and loved ones left at home.
Fugue was created for Dancenorth to perform at the Australian Ballet’s 50th Anniversary Celebrations at the State Theatre in Melbourne. It’s a powerful work set to Ravel’s Bolero, and draws inspiration from Strasbourg’s dancing plague of 1518 where men and women danced for days, some even to their death.
A Fall From Grace premiered at the Australian Festival of Chamber Music in 2012. It was inspired by Lucas Cranach’s painting The Three Graces and negotiates the fine balance between the masculine and feminine.
Dancenorth continues to lead the way in Australian dance, with the company being a model for making international quality art in a regional setting. A celebration of community, Triple Bill is a contemporary dance theatre experience not to be missed.
Based in Townsville, Dancenorth has enjoyed local, national and international success since their inception in 1985.
In 2010, Dancenorth was the first Aust-ralian company to be invited to a two-week residency at the Baryshnikov Arts Centre in New York, where they performed for dance great Mikhail Baryshnikov himself. Over the years Dancenorth has enthralled audiences in London, Germany, Japan, China and around Australia.
Choreographer Raewyn Hill has received numerous awards and endless accolades from critics and audiences throughout Australasia during her 18-year performance career. She trained in classical ballet at the New Zealand School of Dance and established her own dance company in 2001, touring many works, including her solo show to the Sydney Opera House Studio in 2004.
