The Byron Bay team

The Byron Bay team livened things up as well, with their own cheerleading squad, leading their surfers down to the water, cheering from the shoreline, even with the rain, and also doing gymnastic performances on the sand.

But my favourite has to be from the Cabarita crew, even though the club did not organise it.

Tim Chalmers, a Cabarita club surfer, is also a teacher at Tweed River High School. Now Tim always talks about his surfing to his fellow teachers, and most are used to him raving about it, but they have a hard time working out the lingo, including his favourite saying “throwing buckets” – which means throwing huge amounts of spray during a turn. Well his fellow Tweed River High teachers thought they would surprise him during his heat. Just as he hit the water, they all turned up dressed in their Timmy “Buckets” Chalmers T-shirts, especially made for the occasion. He had the biggest cheer squad, and did not disappoint, living up to his “Buckets” nickname and claiming the win for Cabarita. Evidently he returned the favour with “Buckets” of margaritas at Mexican that night.
