Shooting for the stars

Late last term 4/3S and 5/4M at Tweed Heads Public School took part in  a Video Conference with the team at the Space Centre, Houston.
The students were able  to talk  to the Space Centre employees about Astronauts and NASA.
Both classes were so excited to be able to talk with someone in America via Video Conference.
The educator was Steve, who had been working with the Space Centre for some time and was able to field all sorts of questions from the students such as: Does your mobile phone work in space? to What is the Astronauts’ favourite foods (M&Ms he said were the most popular).
Steve walked the students through a Simulation Pod of the International Space Station, where they got to see everything from where the Astronauts sleep to an actual toilet that is on board. As one could imagine, there was great interest in the toilet, with the students amazed that the liquid waste from the toilet is recycled and used on board again, even for drinking water.
The Video Conference lasted for an hour, and was organised through the Department of Educations Rural and Distance Education team by Mrs Mirana, one of the Stage 2 teachers.
“This amazing morning was the final part of our Solar System unit we had been doing all term,” said Mrs Mirana.
“The students were so engaged and asked some well thought out questions, it is something we will definitely do again.”
