Patrons of The Arts Centre Gold Coast will be greeted by a 40kg koala at the Centre’s entrance from this week.
The koala is one of 21 enormous koalas that make up Currumbin Wildlife Hospital’s Animals With Attitude Sculpture Trail event.
This event aims to celebrate the character of the Gold Coast City and raise much needed awareness and funds for the protection of our local koalas, in an exciting and interesting way.
The koalas were sculpted by Academy Award winning sculptor John Cox at his Creature Workshop in Molendinar, and have been painted by highly talented artists from Queensland and all over Australia, creating wonderful colourful sculptures.
The 21 koala sculptures have been spon-sored by local businesses, Gold Coast City Council, and officials of the council, including the Mayor Tom Tate, who sponsored The Arts Centre’s koala.
This weekend is your first chance to get up close and personal with all 21 koala sculptures in Broadbeach between 11.00am and 5.00pm Saturday and Sunday – a unique opportunity to see all sculptures together.
“After this weekend the sculptures will venture out all over the Gold Coast and will form a trail which members of the public can follow using a map which has been put together with the support of Gold Coast Tourism,” says Emma Moore of Currumbin Wildlife Hospital. You can download the map at http://www.cwhf.org.au/events.html
Until Sunday, April 28, the koalas will be on the Sculpture Trail and all the sites which have kindly sponsored the event will welcome visitors to see their sculpture.
The event will raise some much needed funding for the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital which receives no ongoing State
or Federal Government funding but
gratefully acknowledges the current three-year grant from Gold Coast City Council. They also educate people on the plight of the koala in our society and the dangers that they sadly face, with koala admissions increasing rapidly.
The culmination of the Animals With Attitude Sculpture Trail event will see all 21 sculptures return to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary where they will be auctioned off to raise more vital funds on Saturday, May 4 at the Annual Gala Fundraising Dinner
