All across Australia, women came together on Friday, March 8 to Mark International Women’s Day and celebrate what women have achieved and look towards what still needs to be done on the road to gender equality.
At South Tweed Sports, there was a sea of purple (the International Women’s Day colour) as women from all walks of life gathered for the Coolangatta/Tweed View Club’s annual IWD morning.
The day, hosted by Maggie Anne, featured speeches from women who have made a difference to our world and those who are planning to.
The event was opened by View Club president Dianne Lutze, with addresses by Zone Councillor Margaret Ricketts and Member for Richmond Justine Elliot.
Guest Speakers included Tweed Coaster Doris Yabsley OAM, who has dedicated many years
of service to the community; and Liz Cole, who had a long career as a nurse and also in the navy and reached the status of
Commanding Officer in the Australian Defence Force, breaking many defence force glass ceilings and
helping to bring more gender balance and equality to the forces.
Also speaking were Lindisfarne House Vice-Captain Alexandra Bourke and Bond University Collegiate Captain Scholarship winner, Kayla Stewart.
