It was an all Tweed Coast final in this year’s 11-12 Casuarina Cup Rugby Union competition last week, with Pottsville just coming home to beat a determined Kingscliff Public in a thriller.
Pottsville took the early lead but Kingscliff were held up over the line three times and were unlucky not to secure a draw on the bell in the hard-fought final to the annual Casuarina Rugby Union Carnival at Casuarina on Wednsday.
With 240 kids playing, it was a case of all fingers crossed for a little less rain.
The weather gods answered, with clearing skies and “sunshine”, for the 15 teams competing for the Casuarina Cup and Shield.
Participation numbers were high and loads of spectators came down to the well groomed Casuarina Rugby Fields to watch players from Lindisfarne, Kingscliff, Bogangar, St Anthony’s, Ocean Shores, Pottsville and Centaur Primary Schools join in for a day of Rugby Union.
Many of the kids had not played Union before so, with modified rules, the carnival was a great opportunity for both boys and girls to give rugby a try.
The frantic pace of the day was well assisted with Development Officers from both ARU North Coast, Qld Rugby, and Rugby Gold Coast refereeing and keeping the games on time.
Centaur Public School were new competitors at the Carnival and it was great to see both kids and parents enjoying the day.
Most of the boys were from a league background so there were plenty of challenges for the players to learn the Union rules on the fly.
They all did really well and it was great to have both Junior and Senior teams competing.
