Temporary closures are now in place in Ray Pascoe Park and the Kennedy Drive boat ramp areas while Tweed Council carries out water main work.
The temporary closures will be necessary for a number of weeks as Council crews work on constructing the 450mm diameter water main, which crosses the park.
The new 450mm diameter water
main will ultimately replace the existing 300mm diameter water main in this vicinity, which is reaching the end of its design life.
Sections of the park will be fenced off during construction due to the extent of the work being undertaken.
The work has started at the eastern end of Ray Pascoe Park and will continue through the park to the canal at the western end.
It is estimated that the construction within the park will take five to seven weeks to complete, weather permitting.
No work will be undertaken over the Easter long weekend and Council will endeavour to reduce the overall impact on the use of the park and the surrounding areas during construction.
The work will include the removal of contaminated fill from the park and this will be carried out following current legislation and Codes of Practice.
An Occupational Hygienist has been engaged by Council to undertake air monitoring during the construction phase.
Kennedy Drive will remain open to traffic throughout the project.
