Stingers end Comets fairytale start

KINGSCLIFF Stingers have ended the Central Comets fairytale start to the Hardcourt Men’s Hockey League with a 4-2 win over the newcomers at Murwillumbah’s Barrie Smith Hockey Field on Friday night.
The Comets, unbeaten coming into Friday’s game, were without key-players the McMahon brothers, Cory and Luke for the clash with the Kingscliff team – which took full advantage of the understrength competition leaders.
Meanwhile the return of former forward Dwayne Newell has given the Waratah Bobcats a much-needed boost.
Newell celebrated his return with a goal as the always strong Bobcats scored a fighting 5-3 victory over a tenacious East Coast Sharks outfit.
The Burringbar-Mooball team scored four goals and picked up an extra point for scoring in the power play.
On Saturday in the Women’s J.H. Williams hockey league, the combined Tweed-Lismore, arch-rivals Casuarina took on Waratah Falcons for the second week in a row.
Last week, in the Tweed competition, Waratahs won 2-1 but this week the tables were turned as Casuarina hit back to win 4-2 thanks to some strong work from their full back Madison Fitzpatrick.
Meanwhile Kingscliff played Northern Star in Lismore and came away winners 2-1 with goals to their most experienced players Lorrelle Morrisey and Sam Morton however their player of the match was Jordie Dunn.
Tweed’s remaining team, Murwillumbah, played East Lismore going down 3-1. Chloe Saddler had a fantastic game up front for Murwillumbah, creating opportunities in attack with Shari East and Amy Stewart solid in the midfield. However East were too quick and strong.
This weekend of hockey was also a pink fundraising weekend for the Murwillumbah Hockey club. During the weekend they raised well over $3000 with more to come thanks to former Olympian Nikki Hudson who donated a signed playing vest.
The autographed shirt will be part of an online auction over the next month – with the club hoping to add considerably to the tally.
This has been a tremendous effort from the Murwillumbah Hockey Club and they should be congratulated as well as all the players and supporters for making this a huge success
Next week’s games will see in the women’s J.H. Williams hockey league at Murwillumbah on Saturday our local teams Murwillumbah and Kingscliff play each other at 2.10pm and then at 3.35pm Waratah Falcons play Ballina while over in Lismore Casuarina take on Northern Star at 2.55pm.
In the Hardcourt hockey league for men on Saturday it is Waratah Bobcats v Central Comets at 5pm followed at 6.25 by Kingscliff Stingers and the East Coast Sharks.
This will see four first grade games in a row on Saturday so we are in for a real treat next weekend.
