THE Gold Coast Vikings firmly established themselves as the premier rugby league representative area in South East Queensland as they easily accounted for their opponents at Ned Byrne Field Kingscliff last weekend.
In the first Chairmans Challenge series to be played outside of Queensland the open squad, coached by Jamie McCormack was way to strong for both Brisbane (28-8) and Ipswich (62-0), while the under-20 side was also a convincing winner accounting for Brisbane (42-12) and Ipswich (30-10). It was the fifth straight series win for the under-20s who have been coached by Tony Cummings each time.
Cudgen Hornets were represented by centres Jayden Johnson (3 tries), Jake Sands (8 goals), and Zac Spring.
All players performed well. Hornets’ under-19 coach Graeme O’Grady assisted in the preparation of the under-20s while club strapper Darren Phillips tended to the needs of both sides.
This weekend sees the Hornets tackle the powerful Southport Tigers at Kingscliff on Sunday. The Tigers are currently top of the table and undefeated in what promises to be an afternoon of absorbing rugby league.
The NRL comes to Ned Byrne Field on 7 July when the Panthers will clash with the Gold Coast Titans in the national under-20 competition.
The Hornets host Runaway Bay that Sunday and are tickled pink to have such a prestigious match in the local area.
