THE Coast Guard Kingscliff tower sits on the north wall of Cudgen Creek in Faulks Park, Kingscliff.The tower is operational from 0530 until 1800 with volunteers manning the radios on a rotational roster three shifts a day, seven days a week.
All volunteers have a marine radio operators certificate of competency and completed a course. They have also been trained in maritime search and rescue procedures.
The main objective of the radio operator is to keep the boaties safe both in the creek and on open waters. Boaties are urged to register their vessels with the tower and include a land contact number in case of emergencies. It is also advisable to contact the tower by radio on VHF Channel 16 or 27meg Channel 88, calling either VMR 251 or Coast Guard Kingscliff. If a radio is not available the vessel can by logged on via telephone on (02) 6674 2451.
The information required while logging on is the:
- Name of the vessel and its call sign,
- Number of people on board,
- Destination, and
- Estimated time of return.
After 1800, vessels can be logged off by either radioing Marine Rescue Pt Danger or telephoning (07) 5536 9333.
When crossing the bar, it is a requirement by law that all people on board must be wearing a type one PFD (lifejacket).The tower is open to the public at all times at the discretion of the radio operator on duty and people are welcome to visit.
Visits are especially popular during the whale migration period from June to October.
