Fishing on the Tweed By David Solano

TALK about beginner’s luck, on the weekend my mate Richard and his girlfriend Cindy went out for a yak and a little fishing. Cindy has never been on a yak before let alone fished from one, she was armed with one of Richard’s high end rods rigged with a gulp shrimp as the preferred plastic. With a bit of instruction from Richard, Cindy found herself getting smashed by legal flathead and even ended up netting a massive 32cms to the fork bream.
What a morning, it took me a couple of years before I ever caught a bream that big, well done Cindy, I think the instruction and Cindy’s good dexterity played a part with luck sprinkled on top.
The river is really healthy at the moment with a lot of bait fish around to keep the bigger fish interested. Saturday morning I did really well, one of those days where you either catch a fish or lose a fish or get a hit on every cast, magic.
Out of around 30 fish only five were legal, two flathead, two bream and a 37cm whiting, even though I was catching a lot of small stuff it was still fun as on a 1kg-3kg rod with six pound line, sometimes I take it down to two pound and that’s where things can get very interesting, though in saying that two pound is pretty strong it just doesn’t work too well around snags.
