March for a cure this Sunday

This Sunday March 24 the local community is being encouraged to help in the fight against deadly Melanoma and march for a cure in Uralla. The march is one of many scheduled across the country by the Melanoma Institute of Australia (MIA).

The march is being organised by local Jo Dolan whose daughter Kate Philp died of melanoma three years ago and is passionate about getting the melanoma awareness message out.

“So many people are unaware of just how deadly this cancer can be. Amazing progress has been made in the past three years, but there is still such a long way to go. Supporting the work done at the MIA is a cause very close to my heart.”

After the death of her daughter Jo established donate4kate a fundraising initiative to help raise funds for research into finding a cure for melanoma.

Funds raised from the march in Uralla will support efforts by world-leading Australian researchers seeking to unlock the genetic code that causes some people to develop melanoma.

The wider community is also urged to help their efforts by remembering the 1,500 Australians who die from melanoma every year.

The event on Sunday March 24 hopes to raise $200,000 and increase awareness about the issue of melanoma and the urgent need to fund research into finding new therapies and a cure.

Melanoma Institute Australia’s Executive Director Professor John Thompson said, “Those of us who are involved in the prevention and treatment of melanoma through research, clinical treatment and education programs are grateful for the growing support from communities across Australia for this crucial work.”

The march is Uralla on Sunday March 24 will begin at 9.30am and start and finish at Alma Park, Queen Street, Uralla.
