Cabarita’s much travelled air-man Chippa Wilson is home and has organised a huge surfing event to be held at Cabarita on 3 and 4 August.
“Cabarita’s Big Bang” is inviting Open and Junior surfers from all around to show-up and blow-up, and it is definitely worth showing up for with $5,000 first prize for the Open Men, and $2,000 in the Juniors (18 and Under).
With some really big name sponsors backing the event, it is going to be huge, and also it is first-in best-dressed policy, with only 48 spots in each division. Limited field, and big-bucks on offer, I would be getting my entry in ASAP.
Entry is $120 in the Open Division, and $80 in the junior division, with cash and prizes up for grabs.
There will be prizes for the biggest bang and blow-up, and also a different scoring system. Judges will score the best three waves, with the lowest scoring wave’s points to be doubled. This will definitely change some of the strategies to be employed by the competiors, but the main thing is that it will all be about blowing up, doing the big moves, and it will be an exciting event to watch.

BEWARE GROMMET INVASION THIS WEEK
No it’s not just because the school holidays are upon us, but already underway is the 10th anniversay Occy’s Grom Comp. The man himself will be on hand, and the surfing action will be awesome from the young grommets.
With the world’s best 16 and under year-old surfers converging on the Gold Coast, and the event, based at Duranbah Beach and will run from 29 June to 3 July. The Billabong Occy’s Grom Comp is a truly international event with competitors travelling from all surfing states of Australia along with international surfers from South Africa, the United States of America, New Zealand, Tahiti and Japan.
In a coup for competitors, a man-on-man heat format will be utilised for the semi-finals and finals of the 16 and under Boys, 16 and under Girls and 14 and under Boys divisions.
So if you are after a quiet cruisy surf, avoid Duranbah for the weekend.
DEVELOPMENT OF DBAH?
Recently there has been a buzz on social media, that the toilet block and the marine rescue building at Duranbah has been condemed and will be demolished in the near future. The building has been is disrepair for decades, but the building going is one thing, but what has been rumoured is another.
So what’s better than replacing it, or perhaps using the area for parkland and further green space? Apparently the NSW Crown Lands Division wants it to go out for commercial development in the next three to five years? The idea that commercial developments should frame our best surf breaks is becoming more and more prevalent, especially around the Gold Coast with the current mayor busting his guts to see areas around TOS in the Broadwater, The Spit and Wavebreak filled with hotels and casinos rather than green spaces and clean waters.
Nobody knows just yet what kind of commercial development they might want for Dbah. Stay tuned as the latest news comes to hand…
