TWEED teams have had a disastrous weekend in the J.H. Williams Men’s Hockey League with all four sides going down to their Lismore rivals.
The Kingscliff Stingers travelled to Lismore to take on Northern Star.
The Coast team had been confident of winning but a lack of respect for the ball cost them dearly and they went down to Star 3-2.
Also in Lismore the Central Comets, without leading play-maker Luke McMahon, took on East but came away losers 3-0.
The Comets lacked structure and whatever chances they made broke down before the goal hit the back of the net. They were best served by defenders Mitchell Nowlan and Alex Norvell.
In Murwillumbah Waratah Bobcats took on the might of Coraki and they too came away losers with a hard -fought 1-0 loss.
Also at home the East Coast Sharks were up against Ballina and they, just like all Tweed teams, were dominated and came away losers 6-1.
It now seems clear that Tweed teams have a clear lack of goal scorers to finish off games where the Lismore teams are much harder and more dominant .This is something Tweed teams will need to improve from very quickly.
The women’s competition saw far better results for the Tweed as Waratahs, Casuarina and Kingscliff all had wins and while Murwillumbah drew.
At Murwillumbah, Waratah Falcons played Northern Star, coming away 2-1 victors.
Star got an early goal and held onto the lead late into the second half before Waratahs were rewarded with a penalty stroke to Emily Hertherington. And then with three minutes on the clock a quality team goal by Falcons was finished off by Kate Newell.
Also in Murwillumbah locals Murwillumbah took on Lismore’s best team Glee and came away with a 1-1 draw.
Over in Lismore, Casuarina defeated East 4-0 with three more goals to scoring-machine Kim Small and one to Debie Dolan. It was pleasing to see Casuarina’s younger players now starting to stand up and best was young Jade Prestwich
Kingscliff travelled to Ballina and came away with a 2-1 win courtesy of goals to Sinead Edwards and Lorelle Morrissey. Ballina gave a lot of ball to Kingscliff who failed to take full advantage as Ballina’s defence scrambled well.
This week the QLD under-15 boys state championships are being played, rain, hail or shine on Tweed’s artificial hockey fields.
The finals will be held at the Murwillumbah complex tomorrow.
