Million to one shot

Fishing on the Tweed By David Solano

THE weather being what it was on the weekend made fishing very difficult, one positive was we had the river pretty much to ourselves, our target fish was jew and we fished the rock wall all around Fingal.
We actually had light bream gear on and instead of school jew we seemed to land a lot of just legal flathead and midget bream. Then it happened, we were directly opposite the Tweed Heads Golf Course when I hooked up to what I thought was a jew for sure, I fought it to the boat, netted it, then three jaws dropped, it was a beautiful healthy 41cm bass.
We know it’s not bass season so we weren’t targeting them. But what was this fish doing so far away from the fresher water down Murwillumbah way, a one-in-a-million catch I reckon.
I showed the photo to a couple of fisho mates and they reckon it may be an EP (estuary perch) but I’m not sure as I can’t really tell the difference, whatever it was it was a great catch all the same.
But bass at Fingal – who would have thought, cheers.
