IT HAS been running almost continuously for a century and but this year’s historic Tyalgum “Diggers” family day will take on some of the flavour of the event that kicked it off all those years ago.
Diggers Day, this year held on 17 August, has been running since WWI, and takes its name from donations made to the ‘Distressed Diggers Fund’ for returned servicemen.
And for this year’s event organisers have chosen a fitting display – with a troop of Australian Light Horsemen set to demonstrate their ‘tent-pegging’ skills as part of the event which now raises money for a variety of local charities.
Memorabilia from Tyalgum residents who served with the ‘Light Horse’, historical photos and banners and a collection of ‘Light Horse’ artwork will also be on display.
Fine art prints will be available for purchase.
This year’s program also includes: fireworks at sunset, bush skills demonstrations, a petting zoo, market and food stalls, guess the length of the live snake competition, sports and novelty events for all ages, tug-of-war, laser skirmish, vintage cars, live band and bar till 10pm.
The day starts at 11am and runs until 10pm, with the Light Horse demonstration scheduled for mid afternoon. Entry is $10 per family or $3 single.
The event is run by local volunteers. Tyalgum is 25 kilometres west of Murwillumbah.
