Fresh meat for derby

ARMIDALE Roller Derby is opening its ranks for the newest batch of fresh meat, and you still have time to join this term’s intake.
Designed to teach you the basics of skating and the rules of roller derby, Fresh Meat is a quarterly training intake that coincides with the school terms.
The next Fresh Meat and Greet information and sign-on will be held at the Armidale Bowling Club on Saturday, 4 May, at 4pm. Both men and women over the age of 18 are invited to sign up, with no experience necessary.
A wide range of skaters make up Armidale Roller Derby, from farmers and students, IT to PhD, accountants and childcare professionals – everyone is welcome to join the obsession that is derby.
Kathital Punishment is a 30-year-old farmer: “I love roller derby because it is a hardcore physical sport in which I have not found anybody who isn’t out there loving skating and life,” she said.
“The vibe is positive and inclusive of all abilities, age groups, social groups. For anybody who has or hasn’t had previous team sport experience, it is just such a great environment to get active in.”
Carmen D. Storm is a business analyst who thought she was going to find a new way to increase her fitness in a team sport that she might one day want to play.
But she was quickly taken under roller derby’s spell: “I don’t play derby to get fit, I get fit to play better derby. I found a friendly atmosphere full of new friends, where everyone is truly welcome and supported.
“I found I no longer just want to play derby, I HAVE to play derby. What can I say? “Roller derby saved my soul.”
To sign up for the action, be at the Fresh Meat and Greet information and sign-on afternoon at the Armidale Bowling Club on Saturday, 4 May, at 4pm. For more information visit: facebook.com/TheArmidaleRollerDerbyLeague
