Students take over the shire

By TANIA PHILLIPS

STUDENTS from seven Tweed High Schools have come together to take over the shire for a morning.
The student council was held as part of Tweed Shire Council’s Local Government Week celebrations.
Students from all 10 high schools on the Tweed were invited to send two senior students and the seven participating schools were: Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School, Mount Saint Patrick College, Murwillumbah High School, Tweed River High School, Kingscliff High School, Wollumbin High School and St Joseph’s College.
The students met mayor Barry Longland, who talked to them about local government and the challenges facing local government into the future.
They had morning tea with the council’s acting general manager Troy Green and other senior staff, then participated in a mock council meeting, considering and voting on two council reports from the past, one from planning and one engineering and operations.
The students then took part in a feedback session on how a Youth Council could operate at Tweed Shire Council in the future.
This is one of the recommendations of the draft Youth Strategy, which is due to go a council meeting later this year for adoption.
