THE Tweed community is continuing to rally behind the Duroux family, whose son was left a paraplegic after a tragic accident on the Pacific Highway last December.
Tweed Heads PCYC manager Mark Madden said he had received a solid response from community members following a recent article in the Tweed Coast Weekly.
The PCYC is trying to raise funds to help support the Duroux family, whose son Jeffery, 19, was accidentally struck by a car after he ran out onto the highway near Yatala last December following a family dispute.
No charges were laid over the incident
Lucky to survive, Jeffery was hospitalised in Brisbane before being transferred to Sydney last month where he will undergo extensive rehabilitation over the next 12 months.
Jeffery’s mother Lavinia “Beany” Duroux – well known in the community for her work at the PCYC – and his sister Karen, 17, have moved to Sydney to be by his side, temporarily leaving the remaining members of the family in the Tweed.
Mr Madden said he had received several offers of assistance since the article was published, with various local organisations and schools digging deep to help.
However, he said there was still more to do.
“We are still keen to help the family out,’’ Mr Madden said.
“If people want to make a donation, or put any functions on, they can phone the club.
“I’ve just been with the PCYC in Sydney trying to see what we can do to help Karen get some employment, she is down there with her mum and looking for a job down there.”
Anyone who is able to help is urged to phone the PCYC on 07 5599 1714.
