A slippery customer

Fishing on the Tweed By DAVID SOLANO

MULLOWAY, mulloway where art thou? Last season I probably caught around 20 school mulloway in the Tweed River but this season I’ve managed to catch one tinker bell 45cm model down under Tumbulgum Bridge at 4am.
They seem to be so elusive this year but I know that’s not true because I’m friends with some local jew hunters on Facebook and they have posted some rather impressive fish.
The real reason I think I haven’t caught many mulloway this season is that I used to live at Bilambil Heights and every morning I’d paddle or peddle straight past a spot called the ‘jew hole’ (it’s not far from Seagulls). So once I found out how good this spot was, I started to spend at least an hour there casting various lures around, some mornings I’d get three, some days one or two, but there weren’t many weekends where I came up empty. Now I live two hours pedaling from there so it’s a bit far, as when the place is off it’s off.
I’ve ventured there a few times this year but came up empty-handed with the famous mulloway on the Tweed.
I love these pics that fishos put on Facebook because if you look closely at the background you can usually tell where the photo was taken. Funny, a mate posted a photo of himself with a big jack, but wouldn’t tell anyone where he’d been catching these worthy foes, but in the last one he posted you could just make out a bit of the Ivory Hotel.
Gottcha, I thought to myself.
I rang my brother, who loves chasing jacks, and well he caught one then went back the next night and caught another one, both over 50cm, and in saying this it might be easy finding out where to catch – but how you catch them is the hard part.
Hey great news, Sunday morning I caught a nice mulloway at last, gave it to Mum and Dad for lunch, they loved it. Cheers.
