Racing returns to Murwillumbah

RACING is set to return to Murwillumbah on Tuesday when the Tweed River Jockey Club (TRJC) hosts the running of the feature MR Sales Cup, a Benchmark 50 handicap over 1530m.
The full TAB meeting will showcase seven events worth over $100,000 in total prize-money, and will be the jockey club’s first race meeting since the completion of the Murwillumbah Cup carnival in June.
This year’s cup was taken out by the Bindi Cheers trained Zar Zar Binks. Horse and trainer travelled seven hours up the Pacific Highway from their Taree base, making it a long but successful day for the duo.
“We got going at 3.30am and just drove straight through,” Cheers said in June, noting the cup race had “panned out beautifully”.
TRJC secretary-manager Rachael Elliott said Zar Zar Binks displayed a lot of class in taking out the event.
“It goes to show the depth and quality of racing we enjoy here at Murwillumbah, and during the Murwillumbah Cup carnival in particular.
“Zar Zar Binks went on to win the Grafton Cup Prelude at his next run and put in a decent effort in the Grafton Cup itself, which is a listed event worth $150,000 and one of country racing’s premier events Australia-wide.”
With his back-to-back Murwillumbah and Grafton victories, the now four-year-old Zariz gelding has racked-up over $130,000 in career earnings.
