TWIN Towns Funerals have thrown themselves behind the 20th anniversary of Jeans for Genes Day.
For each family who permited the funeral directors to wear jeans on Friday, Simplicity Funerals made $100 donations to the Children’s Medical Research Institute.
“This is the third consecutive year that Simplicity Funerals locations around Australia have participated in the initiative,” said Fred Ferrier, Location Manager, Twin Towns Funerals Tweed Heads.
“We’re proud to support the vital work that the Children’s Medical Research Institute undertakes and share their hope that their research will discover cures and treatments for the genetic disorders that so many Australians suffer from.
“We hope to join thousands of other Australians in denim on Friday, however of course the needs of the families we serve are our priority.
In previous years, most people have been supportive of our fund-raising efforts and have agreed to the request but we make it very clear that they are under no obligation to participate.”
Simplicity Funerals will also be recommending the Children’s Medical Research Institute to families who would prefer charity donations in lieu of floral arrangements, but don’t have a nominated charity in mind.
Genetic disorders which research funded by Jeans for Genes Day focuses on include cancer, cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, blindness, epilepsy and a host of other rarer diseases. According to the Children’s Medical Research Institute, it takes up to 20 years of scientific research and 10 years of clinical trials to develop a new drug to treat a disease.
