WINTER is a quiet time in the garden, what rot!
There are so many jobs to do over winter so we can reap the rewards of a beautiful spring and summer. I have been flat out trying to weed and edge my beds and what a difference that makes to the overall look.
However, in the process there are so many distractions, trimming, lifting and dividing perennials and finding new spots to plant.
If you have spare plants don’t toss them out, share them with others or take them to the nursery, you never know you might get given some little treasure in return.
I have really enjoyed growing my first tree dahlias and with a late onset to winter, seeing them produce the most beautiful blooms, a fabulous gift. Then there are some spaces you discover and the quest is to find something suitable to fill them.
Once I have weeded, edged and rearranged then a new layer of lucerne hay is the next job, quite time consuming but so worth the effort.
The soil here, in not yet three years, is unrecognisable with so much life and that lovely earthy smell, it is now rich with organic matter and fat healthy earth worms. It now has great moisture retention as well as being friable – no more dry hard clods.
When in the garden I am always thinking of ways I can improve the design to enhance the overall picture. I guess this is why I enjoy helping others with their garden designs too.
It is so much fun visiting and talking to avid gardeners or to encourage non gardeners to enjoy the results of their work…….and gardening is so good for the spirit!
