PURLS of wisdom have been instilled in Bilambil Public School children using the age-old craft of knitting.
Class 3/4B has been knitting granny squares to make into blankets for the Friends of the Pound and RSPCA, but there is more to this yarn than just learning a new skill.
Teacher Sharon Butler said the children had embraced the challenge and learnt about perseverance.
“We were doing work on Harmony Day which is about tolerance, peace and community and we came across it on the Internet as something people were doing to help others,” she said.
“We thought it was a nice thing we could do to give the students an understanding that we all have the capacity to contribute to our community.”
The classmates were given knitting lessons from parents and grandparents and their squares have been combined and sewn into blankets donated to local organisations helping homeless animals.
It was a lesson in practice makes perfect, but also showed the students how working together they could achieve something quite special.
Kaycee-Jane Wall took pride in providing charity.
“We are helping to keep the animals warm,” she said.
“They don’t have enough blankets at the animal shelter.”
Amelie Holdom has also enjoyed the project.
“Knitting was hard for the first couple of weeks but now it’s fun,” she said.
